Advertising Character watches mostly took off in the 70's & 80's as shown below in alpha order.
In the 1970's , Time Great Britain produced this Ritz biscuits and crackers watch, no character, just crackers for numbers on a red outer circle background and black circle in the middle and white hands, including the second hand to tell the time.
In the 1980's we have Ronald McDonald Swiss made with Ronald siting and waving in his yellow and red jump suit. Signed Ronald McDonald. There are several versions of this watch with slight variations. Smiling Ronald sits on a white background with black numbers and black hands, including a second hand to tell the time.
In the 1980's, Lafayette produced this different and harder to find Ronald McDonald watch with a train that goes around the dial to count off the seconds and his arms to tell the time and with a Swiss movement. Ronald appears to be running from or with the train around the dial in his regular yellow jump suit with red & white striped long sleeve shirt and large red shoes on a white background with red numbers for the 3, 6, 9 & 12 and his hands to tell the time.
These came in these great colorful plastic top boxes with Ronald McDonald's signature at the top and a great description of the enclosed watch and warranty. Ronald is tipping his left hand while his right is rested on top of one of the fry kids. Watch and box are harder to find then the other version.
In the 1970's Israel produced this Sugar Bear watch with double animation. It has their usual moving eyes ticking off the seconds AND rotating sugar crisps for the seconds. Here Sugar Bear is dressed in his usual blue turtle neck sweater and a smile with his hands in the air and with sugar crisps revolving around the dial as if he is juggling them all on a white background with black numbers and white hands and a second hand to tell the time.
Also, in the 1980's, Bradley produced this Super Sugar Crisp cereal bear with their standard Swiss movement at the time. Here you have Sugar Bear in his normal blue turtleneck sweater and flexing his muscles because after Sugar bear eats his crisps, he turns into "Super Bear" (this alter ego was used to fight monsters who would steal the cereal). A bright orange and yellow background with bold black numbers and red hands to tell the time.
In the 1970's, Elram produced this Swiss Miss watch with a Swiss movement with her in her white and blue Swiss dress and blue shoes, bows in her hair and a big smile on a white background with gold numbers and gold hands, including a second hand to tell the time.
In 1976, Continental Swiss Co. produced this Tony the Tiger for Kellogs with a one jewel Swiss made movement. This full figure Tony shows his smiling face walking along with his red scarf. These nicely made watches came with glow in the dark luminous hands, second hand & minute marks in a very plain red box. Tony is on a white background with black numbers, black minute marks, silver hands and a black second hand to tell the time.
In 1983, Basis Watch Co, Le Jour produced this less seen Tony the Tiger for Kelloggs with one jewel Swiss made movement. This full figure Tony has him smiling with his hand in the air and again with his iconic red scarf. These nicely made watches also came with glow in the dark luminous hands on a white background with black numbers, black minute marks, silver luminous hands, including a second hand and are hard to find today.
In the 1970's, Rovano Watches & Iowissa watch LTD produced this W.C. FRITOS watch based on the comedian W.C. Fields as the Fritos character, one jewel marked Swiss Made. Here is W.C. Fritos dressed as the iconic comedian with his hat, jacket, gloves, cane, and dress shoes and signed on a white background with black numbers, black minute marks and gold hands, including a second hand to tell the time. A rare find today.
