Vintage Jay Ward Watches by Bradley, A&M Hollywood & Q&Q with Fossil mention

It's always time for character watches...Watches with Character.

Ward Productions watches including Boris Badenov, Bullwinkle J. Moose, Dudley Do-Right, George of the Jungle, Natasha Fatale, Rocky J Squirrel & Underdog Character Watches.

Jay Ward (September 20, 1920 – October 12, 1989) was an American creator and producer of animated TV cartoons who strived to create quality work and products. His first set of character watches ran from about 1969-1972 which consisted of high grade 17 & 25 jewel watches. You can learn more about those on my blog "The Original Jay Ward Created Watches". After this first set of watches were created, Ward Productions had Q&Q, A & M Hollywood, Bradley and Fossil create watches for their characters.

In 1979, Q&Q of Japan for the Japanese market produced this rare Bullwinkle based on the poster Jay Ward was producing (see below). Bullwinkle is lounging back coyly on a white background with a large pink heart, black numbers, black minute marks and black hands including a second hand to tell the time. Marked Q&Q Japan PAT Ward 79.

For your reference, here is the matching mini poster order form that Jay Ward would include with some of his first run Hamilton/Buren watches sold at the time.

For more info on those, see my original Jay Ward watch blog.

In 1982, Bradley Time Division produced this super rare Bullwinkle watch with Bullwinkle looking like he just got caught. He is wearing a bright green sweater on a white background with red numbers and black minute marks, a black second hand and with his arms to tell the time. Marked Bradley and P.A.T WARD 1982. I've only ever seen two but more must be out there.

These came in the standard Bradley plastic cases at the time with a warranty.
In 1982, Bradley Time Division also produced this Dudley Do Right PROTOTYPE non working watch i acquired from a relative of a former VP of Bradley Time. Dudley is saluting with a big smile wearing his Canadian Mountie gear (although its only black) on a white background with the 3,6,9,& 12 numbers and stars for the other numbers with fake black hands and the dial reads "curses! foiled again" which Dudley never says which might be why this watch was never massed produced....still a great piece of history.
In 1984, A & M Hollywood produced this Boris and Natasha with grinning Boris dressed in his usual black coat, pants and hat and glamorous Natasha dressed in a purple gown with one hand on her hip. This has just the four black numbers for 3,6,9, & 12. Marked 1984 P.A.T Ward with the back marked made in Hong Kong. A & M Hollywood made both a manual windup and a quartz with the quartz watch marked "quartz" on the dial. Both are hard to find today.
In 1984, A & M Hollywood produced this Dudley Do-Right with Dudley looking curiously while dressed in his usual Mountie gear, red jacket, blue pants, black boots, and a green hat. This has just the four black numbers for 3, 6, 9, & 12. Marked 1984 P.A.T Ward with the back marked made in Hong Kong. A & M Hollywood made both a manual windup and a quartz with the quartz watch marked "quartz" on the dial.  Both are hard to find today.

In 1984, A & M Hollywood produced this Rocky and Bullwinkle with a confident looking Bullwinkle wearing a green sweater with a red insignia standing next to a smiling Rocky wearing his blue flight helmet and goggles appearing ready to take flight.

In 1984, A & M Hollywood produced this Underdog with a determined looking Underdog dressed in his usual superhero outfit, a long blue cape and red tights with a big white letter U on the front. This has just the four black numbers for 3, 6, 9, & 12. Marked 1984 P.A.T Ward with the back marked made in Hong Kong. I've only seen two of these, but more must be out there. Underdog was also produced by LaFayette and is shown under my Super Hero's blog

NOTE: Underdog is not a Jay Ward character. He was created by Dancer Fitzgerald Sample Advertising for General Mills. Ward's production company mark is on the watch so they must have had some type of marketing right at the time.

I like to focus on vintage manual wind up watches but will mention here that Ward productions did go on to have Fossil market a set of Jay Ward watches in the 1990s so they are all quartz powered.
There is:
Boris & Natasha standing together with watch in a case that resembles a bomb. 1991

Boris & Natasha standing together with watch in a box with a matching pin.1991

George of the Jungle with watch in a tin with key chain ltd to 10,000. 1997

Rocky & Bullwinkle standing together with pin & watch in a lunch box 1993

Rocky & Bullwinkle standing together with watch on a card 1993

Bullwinkle & Rocky.  Rocky rotates around the dial with Bullwinkle standing there as if he just threw Rocky. Rocky rotates as the second hand. Bullwinkle is smiling happily against a blue circle background and a larger white one for the black numbers and black hands to tell the time. This was the first run which was replaced by the Rocky and Bullwinkle version where they're standing together shown above.
These came in this bright blue boxes.
